The Stepaway Process

At Stepaway we know that preschool is often the first group experience for young children. In order to ease the transition from home to school, we offer the 2’s program as the first "step" in the process of  growing independence. In the 2’s  program your child will have the security of having his/her parent with him/her for a few weeks  while he/she begins to relate to peers and another adult, the teacher.  The next "step", the 3-year old class, enables your child to learn to be more independent in a classroom of peers and caring early childhood professionals.  He/she will have a variety of learning experiences designed to foster growth of his/her whole person.

The final "step" before elementary school is our 4-year old program where your child will continue to grow in confidence while being exposed to a larger variety of activities and a longer day.  This will enable him/her to be continually challenged and make increased cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth.
New in 2015 is our Pre K program, an extra “step”, for those 4- to 5-year olds who need an extra year in their preschool education before starting kindergarten. This additional year will enable your child to continue his/her development in a smaller class size while increasing his/her school readiness.  The Stepaway process will give your child the foundation of solid early childhood development through our use of Christian values, caring and respect as your child makes those large "steps" from home to school.

Curriculum and Philosophy

Stepaway children are exposed to a variety of planned and spontaneous learning experiences in a newly remodeled space arranged to accommodate large and small group activities.  The teachers plan activities that reflect the CT Early Learning and Development Standards developed by the CT office of Early Childhood.  Our math curriculum from High Scope and literacy and science experiences are all aligned to the state’s preschool standards.  We offer Bible stories and activities to help children learn about God’s love for us.  The preschool classroom is arranged in learning centers with carefully selected  props and materials rotated to adhere to a curriculum theme.  Children work in small groups and receive individual attention from teachers so that each child progresses at his or her own pace.  Large group times include snack, story, circle and music.  Enrichment opportunities include science, cooking, movement and music.  Regular enrichment includes music instruction with Mrs. Bambi Clark, our former director, who is certified in Musikgarten and Orff techniques.
Activities allow children to construct knowledge through carefully structured hands-on experiences.  Our developmental philosophy allows children to develop into confident learners who are able to make choices, ask questions, and love learning.  In order to achieve these goals we know children need to be  loved, valued and respected.
